Are You Creatively Blocked?

I believe that too many artists have normalized the feeling of being creatively blocked. You can feel it. You can feel it when there’s a desire inside of you screaming or whimpering to get out, to be created, to be released even. During a season that feels like a creative desert, it’s time to dig deep and discover what is blocking you. However, if you’ve dismissed your craving one day too long, you may have normalized the feeling of being creatively blocked. So, what are some ways that you can discover if there’s a blockage in your creativity?

Let’s check out some questions together and see if any of these apply to you:

  1. Do you find yourself dismissing your creative idea by rationalizing to yourself that it’s too late for you to do it?

  2. Are you overspiritualizing your desire to create something by forcing yourself to believe that it’s just your ego, your pride, your desire to be applauded or appreciated so it would be too selfish for you to spend the time and energy creating or petitioning your idea?

  3. Do you find yourself silencing your inner child that is excited and passionate about a dream you once held fondly?

  4. Have you been so jaded by rejection and misunderstanding that you are beginning to not even try or express your creative ideas?

  5. Are you worried about what other people are going to say, think, believe about you if you go forward with your creative dreams and ambitions?

  6. Are you afraid to fail?

  7. Is there some unresolved emotional trauma, grief, or regret that is holding you back?

  8. Have you befriended the idea that you are not worth investing into and should be more sensible?

  9. Has your imagination morphed into your enemy in relation to your creative growth and development?

  10. Have you bought into the lie that God doesn’t want you to create?

  11. Have you bought into the life that your creative desires are purely selfish and were not placed into your heart by our Lord, The Ancient Artist?

  12. Are you camouflaging your gifts and talents to just “fit in” and look “normal” to the world around you?

  13. Do you continue to put o your ideas until a “better time” to create?

  14. Are you numbing your creative drive with alcohol, drugs, overeating, overspending, binge watching television, or in any other way in an attempt to numb your inner pain?

  15. Has the demon of comparison lied to you so well that you now believe your voice, your talent, your ideas no longer matter?

  16. Is anything inside of you nudging you with the notion of “yes” to any of these questions?

If there was a moment, a gut check moment, or even a slight pull on your heartstrings, my friend, you may be creatively blocked.

That blockage needs to be addressed so you can feel the river of creative energy flowing through your soul and bringing back to life your dreams and goals that are out there dehydrating. Invest in yourself, Friend. Heal your fractured heart so that you can create confidently again. The world needs your talent. The churches need your gift. How many moving and healing worship songs have never been written due to a creative blockage? How many souls are out there wandering around searching for exactly what you can give? Not everyone can hear the flowers sing, not everyone can feel the emotion of displays, not everyone can hear the words left unspoken, and not everyone can capture the essence of God like creatives can.

You have been blessed with a gift straight from the heart of the Artist who created you.

There’s a reason you thirst to create. There’s a reason your passion stays lit, even if it’s just flickering today. There’s a reason you have been blessed with the exact gifts you carry, and it’s always to your benefit and God’s glory. Please don’t allow satan to steal your creative ministry. Reach out. Reach up. And, let’s get you on the path of creativity that was purposefully designed just for your heart, my friend.

No matter what’s been said to you, what’s happened to you, or what you’ve even done to yourself… no demon can stop the call that God has on your life.
